I'm reading the new Yalom book at the moment ('Staring at the sun: Overcoming the Dread of Death' - chirpy title, innit?) and he talks in it about finding solace in Epicurus's third argument against death anxiety: the argument of symmetry, i.e. our lives are sandwiched between two states of non-being (the time before our birth, and the time after death) - identical, and yet, as Yalom remarks, "we have so much fear about the second pool of darkness and so little concern about the first". When I read this, I felt a certain sense of relief, because it's true, I can wholly 'deal with' the nothingness before me, it's the nothingness after me that rankles, but why should it?

This pic reminded me of this...
