Only three days? Sounds like art ADD. I like your fuzzy field of blue. What caused your Smith period to end?

Just been to NYC to visit the Francis Bacon retrospective in the Metropolitan Museum with none other than this chap and this lady. His later colour combinations were almost too uncomfortable for Amanda to look at but Wally dug the surfaces on his early stuff. I thought that, for an atheist, he gave a frightening and woeful vision of life without God, which he seemed to equate with life without meaning. He really suffered under his atheism, it looks like, but didn't seem at all reluctant about it. A strange, bleak combination. Twas all interesting an' that to hear the different reactions, as well as the different things we were all drawn to focus on in his work. Bacon was new to me; plus I'm not an artist, just a looker so it was extra interesting to hear the others' opinions . Wondered what you think about him.

We came straight out of the exhibition and into a bar with zebras-on-red wallpaper, where we drank a lot of gin. So I guess that's how it affected us.
