The birth of Augustine

In the highly entertaining Studies of Savages and Sex by Alfred Ernest Crawley, I found St.Augustine's famous epigram "Inter faeces et urinam nascimur". There is also a funny reference to this in Mr.Phillips by the admirable John Lanchester.
Pen and ink with watercolour. 18cm x 26cm. Click to enlarge.

St. Augustine, glass-half-full fellow that he was, failed to mention that it's twixt poop and piss we grow, live and indeed die too.
