The loudest most awesome noise I ever experienced as a child was the English Electric Lightning at Farnborough, only ever surpassed in terms of ear damage by the deafening Devo at Hammersmith Odeon.

Memories of the annual air show at Barton Aerodrome. Low-flying English Electric Lightnings, Vulcans and Folland Gnats (and the occasional soft, powerful purr of a Hurricane).
You've definitely caught the brutalist engineering of the Lightning there! Uncompromising jet engine power.

Marvellous style and wit. I can remember the old Lightnings, talk about strapping a seat to a rocket! I think the pilot steered by moving his head from side to side! Uniformly excellent!
